Honestly, to be the best agent possible, it's good to be strong in all areas. Plenty of agents get by with little to no math skills, but to be able to think fast on your feet, especially in a negotiation, is priceless.

Things that will bolster your resume are jobs that place you in a high level of responsibility, a high GPA, extracurriculars, etc. Sales skills definitely come in handy.

Check out some of the books listed in the Links tab on the top of the site. Read up on the collective bargaining agreements. Become as knowledgeable as possible.

do you need strong math skills to be an agent, or are more and more agents hiring accountants? Is there something i can do specifically to bolster my resum’e? Is having sales skills valuable to an agency? Also, are there any books or classes you think i should read, or take that would give me an edge or valuable information?

There is no "sports agency" field. The most important thing is to be a strong candidate, whether that means having connections within the agency, having connections to potential clients, displaying a strong resume, etc.

darren - thanks alot for all the help. i mean im sure i can get through a contract law class, but the whole accounting and all was my only roadblock in sense, cause me and math are not the best of friends. So if i dont have any experience in terms of classes and degrees in the sports agent field, is there a way i could intern for an agency to see if i enjoy the work before i pursue it as a career?

Dan-

You could definitely go the PR, communications route. You would not believe how important that part is to this business, especially in the future. Sure, you can outsource PR and marketing, but if you can do that in-house, you do not have to wait on others to get the job done. UF, in particular, has a great school for PR/communications.

I interned at Career Sports & Entertainment in ATL Georgia.

If it is your dream job its best to be overqualified. Most agents wont have the opportunity to go back to school when they have mortgage payments, car payments, and children to look after. One thing is very doubtful and that is the chance they will lax requirements for agents. With the turnover rate as high as it is in the sports agent business, in my mind your a fool for trying buck the odds and overcome the educational advantage.
