The 2007 NBA Sports Agent Draft

Some loyal readers may recall the attempt that I made back on April 28th, when I tried to Live Blog the 2007 NFL Draft, including the agent and company that had signed each player. It went well until about the 17th pick, when it became very hard for me to find out who represented whom. And then someone was nice enough to send me this list of the first 99 picks and their agents. This draft is going to be different.

I will attempt to list every player taken (only 2 rounds worth, so it should be do-able), their agent, and the agency that the agent works for. At the NBA draft’s conclusion, I will do some analysis and wrap-up with a little synopsis. I will probably be adding information as each pick is announced, so stick around and keep refreshing the page to catch the updates if you are interested.

Is it fair to say that Bill Duffy and Mike Conley, Jr. will get along? Not only did they have 2 of the top 4 picks (including the #1 overall), but 5 out of their 10 selected clients went in the first round (which means that they are guaranteed money).
Why have I never heard of Andy Miller from ASM Sports before tonight? I need to pick things up around here. Someone get Mr. Miller to do an Interview With The Agent pronto!

How about my Florida Gators? They racked up 5 selections out of 60 possible slots. It’s not quite BDA Sports numbers, but it’s still damn impressive. 3 Gators were taken in the first 10 picks, and Chris Richard, a backup, went before Taureen Green, who also went in the 2nd round.
Will Jameson Curry select an agent and play for the Bulls or go back to school for another year?
I am thoroughly exhausted. I have been live-blogging this whole thing and also contributed to ESPN’s TrueHoop live blogger draft (for the Heat…and was very disappointed with their picks). I hope you enjoyed this thread. It sure beat the hell out of my attempt at the NFL Draft.

Andy Miller is one of the most powerful agent’s in basketball. He got his start as the Fleisher Bro’s intern and became big once he got the balls to steal most of their clients.

Yeah Miller has been in the news more than once and has been involved in more than one large lawsuit. He took KG about the time Fleisher and the TWolves colluded in the Smith fiasco. Allegedly he lured most of Eric’s clients away with promises of dates with Wilhemina models? That’s what we call looking out for your clients’ best interests…

I think it’s quality over quantity. Goodwin Sports has represented two of the last five number one overall picks (James in 03 and Howard in 04) and represented two of the top three picks in this year’s draft. Combine that with their unprecedented marketing acheivements (see: LeBron’s marketing deals with the Goodwins and his deals after…120M compared to less than 1M) and there should be no doubt that they are pretty damn good at what they do. And this is without the backing of Wasserman Media, SFX, or CAA (as guys like Tellem and Rose currently have).

It is really not fair to compare LeBron’s marketing deals with the Goodwins as opposed to using his pal Maverick Carter. The bulk of the $120m is in his Nike deal which was a 7-year deal. His major deals were signed when he was with the Goodwins, whomever was his marketing agent at the time would’ve gotten him that much money…

Uhhh…actually that is not true. How about you read this article (http://www2.sabew.org/sabewweb.nsf/e0087b5460c4a721862569c2005fa85a/78bfb8bf269a650f86256ea70057165e!OpenDocument) and see how it all went down. When LeBron was first looking for a shoe deal, most thought it would be for about $50M-$60M (See: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/preps/basketball/2003-04-06-lebron-shoe-deal_x.htm). The Goodwins played all the shoe companies against each other and made that deal happen.

As well, there are tons of other opportunities that LeBron’s people have not capitalized on. He hasn’t signed deals with a restaurant, a car company, a video game company, a cellular phone company, etc. There are always rumors of potential LeBron deals, but to date he’s signed nothing outside of a $500K Microsoft deal and $200K Lawnmower deal (I totally see the marketing synergies between LeBron and lawnmowers). Outside of Nike, LeBron really didn’t even have any ads going during the playoffs. I mean Dwyane Wade was eliminated in the first round, yet still dominated the marketing scene during the playoffs. And don’t tell me that Maverick and his current representatives couldn’t have signed him at least one $1M+ deal.

As well, check back in a month or so when the Goodwins are done collecting a ton of deals for Kevin Durant. People think that those LeBron deals just walked right up to his front door. Those deals were pursued and negotiated. The Goodwins had a plan on how they were going to market LeBron to the world. But after LeBron left them, all of that stuff kind of just went out the window. I truly believe that if the Goodwins still represented LeBron, he would have a ton more marketing/endorsement opportunities than he currently has now.
