Oh, according to Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk, 40 per cent of the NHL's total revenue is earned in Canada.

Hey Jason,
I appreciate the feedback and I know that comes from an article in the Toronto Star. However, the reasoning of the author of that article was severely flawed in attributing increases in NHL revenue to a surging Canadian dollar. First, if we round the portion of the revenue attributed to the 6 Canadian teams to 30%, that means 70% comes from American cities. Then you have to look at what is really happening with the Canadian dollar. The Canadian dollar isn't becoming more valuable; rather, the American dollar has been losing value over the past year. Comparing both to the Euro over the past couple of years, the Canadian dollar has been stable while the American dollar has lost value. This means that he is attributing the gain in revenue to small currency gains of 30% of the revenue that is in Canadian dollars rather than factoring in a large loss in the value of 70% of the league's source of revenue that are attached to the American dollar. Really, the change in the American dollar and Canadian dollar has likely hurt the league as a whole while benefiting the 6 Canadian teams. If the revenue from Canadian teams eclipsed the 50% mark, then there would be validity to an argument based on the gains of the Canadian vs. American dollar. While the NHL certainly is facing problems with tv audiences, the attendance figures speaks for themselves in that this was a record year for Americans attending hockey games. Given that the league is driven by gate revenue, one component of the NHL's business strategy is in excellent shape.

In my opinion, this stat sums it up:

“Consider that while just six of the NHL’s 30 teams are based in Canada, they account for close to one-third of the league’s overall revenue. And since September 2005 alone, the Canadian dollar has surged some 19 per cent in value, from 83.9 cents U.S. to parity. The loonie’s climb may be responsible for as much as half of the league’s revenue gains since the lockout, says one source familiar with NHL finances.”
