good interview... for one, i think bj is a pretty honest and sincere guy, and i can agree---would be the type of guy youd want to rep your own son. experience def does help! at the same time, it is these guys who will in turn, get the job over ANY other average joe shmo. so id have to agree that some of these ex-athletes are making it much harder for others to break in. if you get the "in" youre looking for, take it and run with it.

on the other hand---most of these guys are live&die by their sport----24/7. and i cant imagine that bj, or any other agent is going to give you any hints on how he does his business, goes about it, recruits, or anything else that would rid him of his own competitive edge. at the same time, i dont think he would be completely honest on his contact/relationship with the mayo thats been spread across usc, either. these guys are sharks, and i can guarantee you that agents have been all over mayo for years---regardless of the relationship with bda that was already formed, and have been all over him since the whole thing started... anyway, despite some of these issues, i think you had some decent questions on the board. nice work...

Way to go B.J.. What a great guy. He was a great guy when he came to Chicago and is still a great guy. He is the kind of guy I would want to represent my own son. I think ex players who have good character and such would and should be agents. This would give any youngster a great insite to what is ahead.

Well done, Darren. Great comments on OJ, situation, World Wide Wes, and David Falk.

Being an agent is hard work --- if former athletes want to put in the time and effort, they certainly have an advantage, but there should be room for smart, hard working guys who didn't play in the league to become effective agents. On the other hand, there are already too many NBA and NFL agents!! I see why former players become coaches -- it can be a hassle, but there is potential glory. On the other hand, how many former professional athletes want to become agents and chase and babysit 20 somethings, especially since there's not much glory in it for them?? Interesting topic. Probably need to wait a few years to see if a trend develops.

props on my blog...

Wow. Awesome interview. Sounds like a genuine guy. However I think that as more and more former players get into this business, it is going to hurt others trying to break in. For one, they already have an in, being a former represented athlete and also if I am a young athlete I think I would rather go with someone who has been through what I am about to go through instead of someone who hasn't.
