Good work, Darren, and thanks for linking to my post on the subject. I agree with your article in every respect except the notion that Pat Barrett was unlucky. Read Raw Recruits (written by my friends Alex Wolff and Armen Keteyian. This fall he told the LA Times that he's "not affiliated with any rules. . . . I have no kids in school, I'm not a booster, I'm not alumni."

Didn't realize rules something one is "affiliated with."

The Yahoo! quote you ended with from Marlon Brown is telling: "You could count on one hand the number of draft picks doing it the right way... In fairness to the prospect, a lot of times they don’t know.” He seems to be admitting his agency would go behind the back of a player and pay a guy like Barrett, even if the player or his family had no idea that a shady, backroom deal was brokered.

The above comment was also made on my blog...

Are you kidding me? The real question, though, is who benefits? The player? The player does not see any of the money being handed off to runners, coaches, recruiters, etc. Instead, the player gets told by someone being paid off, who he should end up signing with.

Kevin Love and his dad got over $300,000 in cash, expenses, gifts etc indirectly from Ceruzzi. Pat Barrett didn't keep the money. His payoff would have been if Kevin signed with Ceruzzi they would have likely gave him a payoff and hopefully Kevin being the grateful young man that he is would kick back some funds to Pat's progam.

The agents are the guilty parties in this thing. Not that you can blame them. I mean you get a kid and get him signed to a 10+ million dollar contract and it cost them $250,000 to get him. That's money well spent. Unethical but, well spent.
