Comment on The New MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement’s Negative Effect On High School Draftees by Ken

Interesting take on the new MLB CBA. Taking money and opportunity from non-represented parties at the bargaining table is not new. The NFL, NBA and NHL have all done it. In fact, it is done all the time in politics and other industry union negotiations. It is easy to take things from people who have no voice or vote.

I think we might be losing sight of one fact, though. Not every high school player drafted is college material. Just like in life, not every high school graduate is college material. There is nothing wrong with that. Each person is different and each will travel their own path in life. So guaranteeing college tuition may not be the easy answer it appears.

The rules of the draft signing game have changed. I am sure players, families, agents and advisers will find a work around. College material players that get drafted can take the bonus money, put it into a 529 plan for later use on college tuition, and pursue their MLB dream. It may take a little discipline not to just go out and spend. But doesn't this accomplish the same thing as a tuition guarantee?

Players drafted out of high school always had the choice to attend college and they still have that choice. I don't think the new structure will, in the long run, have that dramatic of an effect on the players.

Your comparison goes a bit far - indentured servitude was indeed an agreement of exchange between labor and owner with the promise that at some point labor could become the owner but it also served to establish class, race, and gender divisions and in the end all that labor could hope to gain was the freedom to own. Division I college athletes recieve a free college education, the opportunity to graduate with no debt, job training, athletic training, skill training, nutrition counseling, strength training, shoes, clothing, travel per diem, bowl game gifts, academic support AND a living stipend with which to pay rent and food. If you believe this is indentured servitude I encourage you to rethink your historical reference in historical context. If you think this is indentured servitude than you must also believe the same for professional internships, apprenticeships, low paying jobs etc..... Athletes are NOT abused or oppressed, they are kids who have an opportunity to better themselves mentally and physically and for the best, to showcase their talents on a national stage, getting professioanl attention and professional sport opportunities. If college athletes think the college AMATEUR system is unfair, than they have the choice NOT to participate - they can hone their skills at a prep school or overseas or with their own private trainer for 2-3 years and then try their luck at getting drafted. If the system were so unfair I expect many would do so. But college athletes know as does anyone who works with a college athlete on a daily basis that college is where they can get the top training, development, opportunity in SPORT while also having the ability to get a college degree. They are not superstars, they are kids, who play a game and for most of them that game will not continue after they graduate. But they CAN graduate from a 4 year university, with no debt, and if they did it right, a whole pocketful of networking references and college faculty who will vouch for them on the job market.

I find this article very inspiring. I will keep it in the back of my mind when I am struggling to continue to put in the grunt work at my internship. I'm amazed at how much you do.....you really are an asset to any organization, especially in sports because you understand the nuances of the industry. Keep it coming, we all can learn something from you. Good luck.

what is the state of this as of today. could an agent who was qualified to become an agent in 2011, but did not because of the lockout, be grandfathered in if they had a client who was eligible and would have entered the draft in 2011?

What a ridiculous smear campaign. Lozano occupies some well- earned rarified air in the sports agent world. Whether the person (or people) behind this are his former partners and BHSC, Scott Boras, or another jealous agent, it truly reads as one pathetic attempt at playgound rumor-milling.

An unmarked envelope..........no named sources.........pictures that even the casual computer user would recognize as photo-shopped.....etc. And those are just a handfull of the reasons that no credible news outlet has run with this story.

If the allegations were 100% true then someone - ANYONE - would have agreed to be quoted for the "story".

The NCAA does not allow a student athlete to authorize anyone to enter into agreements for them. Hence the law is out of compliance. Agents are only allowed to advise. If you read the NCAA rules regarding agents the state of Arkansas is in a state of confusion.

I think it's hilarious that it came in an unmarked envelope. BHSC will do anything they can to trash him. It's ridiculous and quite pathetic. People who truly know Danny's integrity don't think twice about these allegations, except feel sorry for him that he still has to deal with the idiots trying to slam him name from BHSC

If the allegation are true his success story was too good to be true, it’s a pity that one of the most recognized agents beside Scott Boras and few others in recent years have decided to do things the wrong way. One thing that people tend to forget is that you will always get caught, if the allegations are true and all the facts are real the moral of this story is do things right!!!
