This Shabbat Shalom: Friday Wrap-Up is coming to you from the New Orleans Airport. I will be back in Miami in approximately 2 hours. Just wrapped up another great time in NOLA where I was fortunate to judge Tulane’s Baseball Arbitration Competition for the second straight year. It was also my birthday yesterday, which always makes for an interesting time in New Orleans. Anyway, here are some stories I missed over the past week. Thanks to everyone who wished me a happy birthday yesterday.

Football

The union would never sign such a waiver on behalf of its players [Players would fight NFL’s concussion lawsuit waiver; league denies plan].

It was not easy for me to write and publish “My Jerry Maguire-esque Moment?“, but it felt damn good and I am so very appreciative of the comments on the post, the emails I have received, and the tweets sent in my direction in response. All of your support means a lot to me. I hope that I live up to all of your expectations. At the end of next week, I will be in New Orleans serving as an arbitrator at The 5th Annual National Baseball Arbitration Competition. Professor Gabe Feldman and his students put on a tremendous event, and I am always honored when I receive the invitation to participate. My birthday is next Thursday. Turning 27-years-young. Can you believe that we are already almost one month through 2012? This past Saturday, I started up a brand new website strictly dedicated to covering the world of Sports Law. It is called Sport-In-Law. Check it out and let me know what you think. I am looking forward to serving as an arbitrator again at Tulane’s National Baseball Arbitration Competition. Unfortunately, I have to leave early that Friday, so I will not be able to moderate one of their fantastic panels. I am also excited to be speaking at the Sports Lawyers Association Annual Conference in May. It will be held in San Diego, California. I will be speaking alongside Donald Remy, new NCAA general counsel, on a panel titled, “Hot Topics in NCAA Legal Issues: Agents and Amateurism.” Here are some stories I missed over the past week:

Welcome to 2012! I hope all of you are still sticking to your New Years resolutions. My personal resolutions are to stop biting my nails, stop cracking my knuckles, smile more often, and cut out some red meat from my diet. Huge news yesterday with the announcement of Lagardère Unlimited acquiring Gaylord Sports Management Group. It is certainly signing season in football. I probably hear of roughly 10 new player/agent signings per day. I do not cover all of the signings on Sports Agent Blog, though. Follow me on Twitter to receive some of the signings information that does not get posted on this site. And make sure to check out the exciting new MSBA program that Ben Sturner and co. have put together! Here are some stories I missed over the past week:

I am back from Barcelona and Israel! It was a fantastic trip full of sightseeing, eating unbelievable food, and relaxing with my girlfriend and her family overseas. However, I must admit that it is nice to be back around my friends and family. You know you are doing what you love when you do not mind getting back to work. My Miami Heat are off to a great 3-0 start! I will be attending the home game on Monday against the Atlanta Hawks. Sports Agent Blog will be turning 6 years old tomorrow. A site that began on December 31, 2005 as a New Years Resolution to “force myself” to stay on top of the happenings in the sports agent industry has become quite the successful venture. Thanks to each and every one of you reading this post and thousands of other posts that have been written over the many years. Your continued support will keep a smile on my face. Shabbat Shalom! In a few days, I will be saying shalom with more regularity, as I will be traveling in Israel. But first, I will be in Barcelona for a couple of days. I leave later today for the trip, which will keep me out of the United States until December 25. This is my first time going to Barcelona and my third time venturing to Israel. I doubt I have much access to internet and I have not yet tested out the WordPress app on my iPad 2, so I am not sure whether I will be posting at all between today and Christmas Day. Last weekend in Memphis, Tennessee was a great success. We put together a tremendous Professional Sports Counseling Panel at the University of Memphis and received fantastic feedback from athletes, parents, agents, and administrators with regards to Memphis’ first Agent Day. I have to really thank my partner Jason Belzer; he is the reason that Collegiate Sports Advisors is going to be a successful venture. Lots of big deals being brokered in the NBA and MLB. Baseball Agent Dan Lozano Gets Scorched By Deadspin

Prior to last night, if baseball agent Dan Lozano was a stock, his rating would be “Buy, Buy, Buy.” It is not a far-fetched claim to state that no agent, in any sport, has experienced the meteoric rise in popularity in the past few years that Danny Lozano has accomplished. Lozano departed from Beverly Hills Sports Council (BHSC) in 2010, and took his major clients with him. Those clients included Albert Pujols, Jimmy Rollins, and Michael Young. These big names became clients of Lozano’s new Icon Sports Group.

In 2011, Lozano hit the recruiting circuit hard. He signed Nick Swisher (formerly represented by Joe Bick), Yonder Alonso (formerly represented by Greg Genske), Carlos Beltran (formerly represented by Scott Boras), and Alex Rodriguez, amongst others. It seemed like Lozano was on freaking fire. Gary Wichard type of crazy, quick success. But when one increases in popularity, the skeletons come out of the closets. Those with gripes come forward to spill the beans. If you read the post that was published yesterday on Deadspin, you will find that someone had a very large can of beans to fry. Writes Barry Petchsky of Deadspin,

A plain manila envelope with no return address recently appeared on the desks of a number of media outlets, including ESPN.com, Sports Illustrated, Fox Sports, and Deadspin. Inside were names, documents, and photographs, all telling a story of Lozano’s rise to power by any means necessary.

Here is the money shot, which a former co-worker of Lozano’s said to Deadspin:

“You kind of accept that you’re getting into the sleaze. It’s a sleazy world. But Danny was King of Sleaze Mountain.”

One must read the entire story to understand the depth of the accusations and view the pictures that are attached to the post. While reading Petchsky’s piece, Lozano does not come off as a “super agent,” but instead, someone who will go to any and all lengths (including hiring escorts) to gain and please clientele.

Albert Pujols, Jimmy Rollins, and Lozano’s other clients will undoubtedly read the article published on Deadspin. The most interesting thing will be to follow their reactions and whether any of them publicly comment on what was written.

On To The Next One: Carlos Beltran

Baseball agent Dan Lozano of Icon Sports Group has recently found himself on the right side of our On To The Next One segment. In the beginning of 2011, New York Yankees right fielder and first baseman Nick Swisher left Ohio based agent, Joe Bick of Pro Star Management, Inc for Danny Lozano. Then, it was reported that young stud Yonder Alonso of the Cincinnati Reds dropped Greg Genske of Legacy Sports Group for Lozano’s fairly new agency. Swisher and Alonso are very popular and talented players, and they were represented by two very respected and successful agents. Lozano has certainly been acquiring top quality talent from notable agents since his departure from Beverly Hills Sports Council.

The most recent acquisition by Lozano is of Carlos Beltran. Yesterday, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com tweeted that Beltran, formerly represented by Scott Boras of Boras Corp., has made the switch to Lozano. It is rumored that Beltran interviewed many potential suitors prior to selecting Lozano as his new agent.

Now Lozano represents Albert Pujols, Jimmy Rollins, and Carlos Beltran, three of the hottest free agents this offseason. I have a feeling that Lozano does not regret branching off from Beverly Hills Sports Council to start up his own practice. But he will surely have his hands full over the next few months.

Halloween is on Monday, but most people I know are celebrating this Saturday. Any good costume ideas? About to jump into speaking season, as I will be traveling to New York Law School next Friday and then hopping on a flight that night so that I can lend my words to the attendees of Arizona State’s 2nd Annual Conference On Sports & Entertainment Law. A couple of weeks later, I will be heading to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia to accept my 10 NEXT Award, and I am already calendaring events for the Spring. Meanwhile, I am staying very busy working on behalf of my excellent clients, updating this website, and teaching a great group of students at Indiana University. Baseball

Agents’ average posting fee guess was $45 million and they believe he will get a 5-6 year deal for $72-75 million [Agents Predict Darvish's Posting Fee, Contract].
Scott Boras also didn’t represent Cano on that contract and does not get a commission if the options are taken by the Yankees [Cano's agent wants contract redone; Yankees GM hasn't returned call].
