The Boston Celtics are getting a run for their money ...

The Boston Celtics are getting a run for their money in the first round of this year’s NBA Playoffs. They should have learned to take their first round opponents seriously after barely beating the Hawks in the first round last year. Maybe it’s just that they did not expect the #1 overall pick from this year’s draft to have such a resounding impact in his first playoff series as a professional. Derrick Rose has definitely stepped his game up, but I doubt his agent, B.J. Armstrong, is the least bit surprised.

Last week, Jonathan Abrams wrote a piece in the N.Y. Times that highlights the relationship between Derrick and B.J. They do all the normal things that agents and their clients do, like talk about endorsement deals and other opportunities, but most importantly, B.J. can relate with Rose because they both played ball for the same professional team in different eras. B.J. can not only prep Rose for his off-the-court matters as any agent would do, but can also lend insight on how to play the actual game.

How valuable is it for a client to not only be able to learn from his agent concerning business and legal issues, but also have his agent be a mentor in fine tuning his trade? Derrick has both with B.J. Armstrong and WMG in his corner. Game 5 is tonight. I wonder if B.J. has any pointers for Rose leading up to tip-off.

Now that the drafts for the major professional sports leagues ...

Now that the drafts for the major professional sports leagues have passed, and we continue our mid-summer grind toward the start of the NFL, NBA, and NCAA seasons, I felt it was a good time to release the first edition of the Sports Agency Power Rankings. As more and more agencies merge into larger conglomerates and others continue to rise and fall in an already crowded and extremely competitive market, it seems only natural to try and identify which agencies wield the most power and respect.

First of all, an agency must have multiple representation or business divisions to be considered for the Power Rankings. In order to determine why one agency deserved to be ranked above another, I created several criteria for judging purposes. Listed below, in order of relative weight of importance, are the criteria.

Quality of athletes in each division

Track record and respectability of division’s agents

Recent success in NFL/NBA/MLB/NHL drafts

Quality of overall agency leadership

Recent growth, acquisitions and startups

Future growth potential

Quality of services provided by each division

Number of athletes in each division

Number of divisions

Quantity of athletes lost to other agencies

Notice that much more weight is given to qualitative factors rather than quantitative. It can be agreed that representing two 1st round draft picks is worth more then representing six 7th round picks. Almost as important as the actual clientele are the agents and management that run the firm. Agencies who are well known for their negotiating talent, respectability amongst industry peers, and visions for the future fair much better then ones who have gotten their clients terrible contracts and are loathed by clients and competitors alike.

Sport Agency Power Rankings

#1 Wasserman Media Group

To say that Wasserman Media Group (WMG) has had incredible success over the last year is a true understatement. With already strong baseball and soccer divisions, WMG was able to expand and then position itself to dominate its own niche in action sports representation. More importantly, and due largely in part to the hiring of agent BJ Armstrong, Wasserman’s basketball division has absolutely exploded, and has become THE premiere basketball representation division in the country. WMG’s leadership is second to none as Casey Wasserman, arguably the most successful young executive in all of sports, heads the company.

Notable Clients: Sammy Sosa, Ben Wallace, Antawn Jamison, Derrick Rose, Landon Donovan.

#2 Creative Artist Agency

In terms of sheer quantity and quality of athletes, one would be hard pressed to find a better and more prestigious agency than Creative Artist Agency (CAA). With strong divisions in all major sports and entertainment and an instantly recognizable client base, it is difficult not to give CAA the top spot in the rankings. What has dropped it to the #2 spot, though, is the bad reputation of some of its agents, a ‘relative’ lack of success in the recent NBA draft (notably losing Derrick Rose to WMG), and its sheer size, which for most athletes and personalities is just too big. Leon Rose, Tom Condon, and Ben Dogra amongst other agents of the firm are far from admired by most of their colleagues and industry peers.

Notable Clients: Derek Jeter, Lebron James, Payton Manning, Sydney Crosby, David Beckham, Tony Hawk.

#3 Blue Entertainment Sports Television

During the course of the last year, the sports and entertainment subsidiary of venture capital firm Blue Equity, Blue Entertainment Sports Television (BEST), has positioned itself as one of the top players in the sports representation industry. With acquisitions of Black Wave Media (Basketball), Joel Segal (Football), Game Seven (Coaches) and SFX (Tennis), BEST has surpassed (or just brought up) many firms who have been around for decades more, and is poised to give both WMG and CAA a run for its money. BEST did not see great success in this past year’s NFL and NBA drafts, but strong leadership by COO Michael Principe most definitely insures that BEST will be on the track to future growth and success.

Notable Clients: Reggie Bush, Michael Vick, Rasheed Wallace, Tom Crean, Andy Roddick, Justin Henin.

#4 International Management Group

International Management Group is the grandfather of all agencies and is considered amongst the old guard of athlete management and representation firms. For sheer monetary value, IMG and its respective properties cannot be matched by any other agency. Recent estimates have put the company’s worth at over 2 billion dollars. IMG has divisions in sports and modeling representation, collegiate and professional sports franchise marketing, and corporate and media sports consulting. IMG has moved away from team sports representation in recent years, its football division most notably ending up at CAA. Regardless, IMG represents the most financially successful athletes and personalities in the world and is by far the largest mover and shaker in the world of sports marketing and representation.

Notable Clients: Tiger Woods, Freddy Adu, Jeff Gordon, Tom Coughlin.

#5 Octagon

Also considered amongst the older guard of agencies, Octagon has set itself apart from IMG by continuing to be a strong player in not only sports marketing and consulting, but athlete representation as well. With solid football, basketball, Olympic sports and golf divisions, Octagon remains one of the elite management firms. Octagon will soon expand to both the MLB and NHL and has strong leadership under CEO Rick Dudley and Phil de Picciotto, President of Athletes and Personalities. There is little doubt that Octagon will continue to be a major player in the representation industry and one of the premiere leaders in the sponsorship marketing and consulting sector.

Notable Clients: Chris Paul, Rudy Gay, Aaron Rodgers, Bill Cowher, Mike Hulbert.

#6 CSMG

CSMG marks a drop off from the larger agencies with unlimited budgets and millions of dollars invested in intellectual properties and events. CSMG’s areas of strength include its basketball and baseball divisions. The firm also has a ‘masters’ division, which includes many of the top baseball coaches in the country as well as many notable play-by-play announcers. CSMG has not had recent success in the NBA draft, but its MLB division continues to grow and is one of the largest amongst all agencies.

Notable Clients: Dwyane Wade, Anthony Parker, Felix Hernandez, Ken Macha, Neil Everett.

#7 Career Sports & Entertainment

Career Sports & Entertainment has one of the more prominent basketball coach representation divisions in the nation, which includes many of the most celebrated NBA and college coaches. Along with their coaches, Career Sports has a respectable baseball and golf division and one of the leading sports broadcasting divisions around. Interestingly enough, as their broadcasting division continues to gain strength, their coaching division has taken a substantial hit as of late with the losses of Billy Donovan, Tom Crean (now at BEST) and the scandal laden Kelvin Sampson.

Notable Clients: Doc Rivers, Eddie Jordan, Clark Kellogg, Erin Andrews, Bobby Cox

# 8 Premier Sports Management

Premier Sports Management was a mid-size but relatively low-key football representation firm until this spring. It joined forces with the law firm of Stinson Morrison Hecker to create Premier Stinson, a firm that represents over 75 elite level coaches. With hands down the largest multi-sport coaches division in the country, combined with a respectable football division and several broadcasting clients, Premier has launched itself into the Top 10 of the Agency Power Rankings.

Notable Clients: Drew Bennett, Willie McGinest, Laila Ali, Pete Caroll, Roy Williams

#9 Athletes First

Headed by David Dunn (of Steinberg, Moorad, and Dunn infamy), Athletes First’s concentration is football with a small but respectable baseball division, and a handful of football coaches on both the NFL and NCAA level. Athletes First has not had incredible success in either the NFL or MLB draft as of late, but represents several recent late first day and second day draft picks.

Notable Clients: Joey Harrington, Matthew Hasselback, Ray Lewis, Dennis Erickson, Bill Musgrave.

#10 The Agency

The Agency Sports Management & Marketing has continued to build a legitimate sports management practice by creating partnerships with larger firms and independent agents. The Agency only exclusively represents a few of its clients, notably its coaches and some of its broadcasters. At any rate, they have become proven leaders in sports and client marketing, which in turn has allowed them to build a deep network of agencies willing to outsource work to them.

Notable Clients: Troy Aikman, Carmelo Anthony, Ben Howland, Mike Brey, Stephon Marbury.

It has been a week since ESPN delightfully covered the ...

It has been a week since ESPN delightfully covered the 2008 NBA Draft. Adam Silver has never had as many people cheer for him in his life (if you did not see the second round, then you have no idea what I am talking about). We have had enough time to digest the plethora of trades, the Darrell Arthur disaster, and the opening of free agency. It is now time to look back and see how the top agencies fared in the draft process. If an agency only had one client taken in the draft, I figured it would be better to leave their name off of here (that does not mean in any way that they did not have a successful draft). Onward!

Wasserman Media Group (Arn Tellem, BJ Armstrong, Dan Tobin, Greg Lawrence, Thad Foucher, Bob Myers) – The WMG team had an unprecidented draft. BJ Armstrong stole the show by representing the #1 overall pick, Derrick Rose. Because BJ was always mentioned with Rose, many looked over the fact that he is also the primary agent for #14 pick, Anthony Randolph. Quite a first year for the one-time Chicago Bull. Arn Tellem did not do too poorly himself. Danillo Gallinari went higher than many had anticipated during the week. While Tellem may not be “listed” as the primary agent for many of WMG’s 7 first round picks, you have to believe he had a heavy hand in persuading the players to go Wasserman’s way. Add to the stable Brook Lopez, Robin Lopez, Maarty Leunen, D.J. Augustin…yeah, this one is easy…Grade = A+

Priority Sports (Mark Bartelstein, Aaron Mintz, Brad Ames) – Forget A-Rod vs. Canseco, T.O. vs. the media, and Shawn Chacon vs. the Astros GM. I want to see Tellem vs. Bartelstein. If you had to ask me which two names currently dominate the NBPA agent landscape, it would have to be these two fellows. If your last name starts with a “B”, chances are, Bartelstein represents you. His company got J.R. Giddons drafted in the first round, way above where I thought he would go. At the same time, Trent Plaisted slipped a little further than Bartelstein probably hoped he would. The company definitely jumped for joy when Brandon Rush became a lottery pick. Overall, Priority had another solid showing. Grade = A

BDA Sports (Billy Duffy, Calvin Andrews, Rade Filipovich) – The biggest news leading up to the NBA Draft had maintained the spotlight for quite some time: O.J. Mayo fired Calvin Andrews and BDA Sports after NCAA violations came to light regarding Mayo’s acceptance of money through a runner for the agency. In my mind, BDA had to do quite a lot to rebound from that devastating news, which may continue to get worse if further sanctions are placed on the agency. I do not feel like they ended up very happy. Besides losing Mayo, James Gist was picked later than expected, but Goran Dragic was taken right about where he was predicted to go. Overall, 2008 was a disappointing year for a company that used to be right up alongside Priorty. Grade = C-

Excel Sports Management (Jeff Schwartz, Sam Goldfeder) – For a long time, mock drafts had Jerryd Bayless projected as a top-4 pick. It is not Schwartz’s fault that Bayless slipped as draft day approached; Bayless was probably being hyped a little bit too much beforehand. Having a lottery pick is always a win for a sports agency, and Excel must be happy that Bayless went in the top 14. Having two lottery picks is even nicer…Kevin Love is also a client. The true icing on the cake is that Luc Richard Mbah a Moute was taken at the beginning of the second round. Mbah a Moute was not even a lock to be picked at all. Grade = A

Montgomery Sports Group (Roger Montgomery) – Not a bad draft for a man who only represented four guys going into last Thursday. Sonny Weems was taken higher than expected and Darrell Jackson went right about where he was predicted to land…and to a team that desperately needs some help. I have no criticism for Roger, but until he breaks into the first round, I am unable to give him an A. Grade = B+

Creative Artists Agency (Leon Rose, Andre Buck) – It was looking like CAA was going to be left out of the first round shuffle until the aforementioned O.J. Mayo affair went down. But even more surprising is that CAA ended up with two lottery picks. The second is Jason Thompson, who has Andre Buck as his primary advisor. Who could have predicted that the Rider forward would be selected twelfth overall? The only thing holding me back from giving CAA an A+ is the slipping of CDR (Chris Douglas-Roberts). Tenth pick in the second round? Something went wrong there. Grade = A-

ASM Sports (Andy Miller, Justin Zanik) – Serge Ibaka, Sasha Kaun, Omer Asik, J.J. Hickson, Marreese Speights, Deron Washington, and Richard Hendrix all got drafted. It seems like ASM has not gotten its due praise because WMG has been taking all of the headlines. Someone hire a PR expert for this company, ASAP! Between WMG and ASM, how does anyone else compete? Sure, James Mays and David Padgett were not selected, but I am sure that they will find a team to play for. Grade = A+

Three out of the big four American professional sports have ...

Three out of the big four American professional sports have gone through the process of selecting a new class of rookies for the start of their respective next seasons. The only sport left is basketball, which will conduct its yearly draft on Thursday, June 26th. The television coverage should be a little more exciting than whatever what broadcast for four grueling hours during the MLB Amateur Draft. For one, the commentators tend to be more bearable. Other reasons that the NBA Draft tends to gauge more of an interest among fans is that with only two rounds of selections, fans have become accustomed to the names of many of the young men who will be selected. It also helps that many of the selections will be thrown right into the mix of the teams that select them, while in the MLB, a majority of the players chosen never even make it to the big stage. Here is the quick when and where so that you do not miss your team’s picks:

When: June 26th: 7 p.m. EST on ESPN.

Where: Madison Square Garden, New York

Want some helpful links to guide you up to draft day? See below:

My main focus on the draft will be following the success of the WMG team which includes agents Arn Tellem and B.J. Armstrong. I interviewed B.J. a little less than a month ago (click here), and may be following up with him again for another special feature on this blog. Yeah, Arn is the man…he apparently had much to do with WMG’s signing of Rose. B.J. is also showing that he is fit for the job. One guy getting left out of the discussion so far is Lee Melchionni. We covered his signing with WMG last October, when he was shacking at the Tellem household. Melchionni does not serve as a primary agent for any of WMG’s clients, but he is getting some hands-on experience. His tasks include having a client’s dogs shipped to him on a plane and ordering a player 82 custom suits, so that said player would never have to wear the same suit to a game twice.

WMG hopes to hear these clients’ names called on Thursday: Derrick Rose, Brook Lopez, Robin Lopez, Russell Westbrook, Anthony Randolph, Marty Leunen, Danilo Gallinari, D.J. Augustin, Jason Rich, Davon Jefferson. That list is unprecidented. I cannot personally remember any agency have the potential to dominate a draft in any sport quite like WMG has positioned itself. Actually, Darren Gill has done a decent job putting his name in the mix when it comes to the CFL Draft.

Dynasty does not have any players in the 2008 NBA Draft, but we are in discussions with a few players that have put in some time in lower professional leagues like the NBDL and IBL. We hope to make a splash in 2009’s draft, but for now, we are content with getting our feet wet representing players who are right on the cusp of joining an NBA team. Look for an update on this front very shortly.

Also, I will be the subject of a couple of interviews this week. Make sure to check out the podcast on HoopsAddict.com that should be posted early in the week, which you can download by clicking here. And also be sure to tune in to my live appearance on the Region Buzz Sports Show. If you are in the Chicago area, you can listen to it live by listening to 1230 AM on your radio from 6:00-7:00 p.m. CST on Thursday. If not, it will be posted here for download.

I am not shocked to read the plethora of clippings ...

I am not shocked to read the plethora of clippings that claim Derrick Rose is done with his workout tour after only showing his skills off to the Bulls. I was also not blown away when I read Rose politicking more than Barack Obama and John McCain in an effort to have Chicago sign the hometown boy with the first overall pick. In fact, with all the recent publicity that Rose, his family, and his agents are receiving, I was most surprised to read this,

“When I signed with (agent) Arn Tellem, we were in a room,” Rose said. “He was like, ‘Which team do you want to play for?’ And he was like, ‘I know your hometown.’ Everybody in the room started laughing because we thought it was impossible. That night when the Bulls got the No. 1 pick, I was looking at the TV like this can’t be true.”

Arn Tellem? But B.J. Armstrong is Rose’s primary agent. Sure, Arn is also an agent at WMG and probably shares adjacent office space to B.J., but all previous signs seemed to show that B.J. was in control of this situation from day one. I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing B.J. Armstrong and hope to follow up with him again sometime soon. In the interview, this dialogue went down:

Me: Is there any particular reason that Derrick Rose picked you as his primary agent over Arn Tellem?

BJ Armstrong: Again, I think that Derrick chose me largely because I played in Chicago and he grew up in Chicago watching me play. There was a time in Chicago where I played on some pretty good teams. The things that happened in that city as he was growing up probably left a mark on him. Again, I believe that I was the beneficiary of good timing. Derrick and I even played the same position. Sometimes things just line up…you can’t plan it. I think we just had a few similarities in our background that made it all work out for a lot of different reasons.

Interesting that Arn was never mentioned. It seems like good old Arn may have had more to do with Rose’s bond to WMG than I had originally assumed. Anyway, it seems like it is almost a lock that Rose will be the first name called next week. I cannot wait to share the joy with B.J. and the WMG family. They have quite a team and a solid young talent in B.J. who will be sure to continue to make headlines in the future.

On the heels of an excellent interview with Leigh Steinberg, ...

On the heels of an excellent interview with Leigh Steinberg, I was approached by a close friend of BJ Armstrong. The friend requested that I take the time to interview the 1989 first-round pick of the Chicago Bulls who later on became a basketball analyst for ESPN before landing his current job as an NBPA agent with Wasserman Media Group (WMG). My initial conversation with BJ’s friend occurred about a week prior to my May 11-21 trip to Israel. Until this past Saturday, we were unable to schedule a time for myself and BJ to have a conversation. Then I received a call at 10:30AM EST, 7:30AM PST. BJ’s friend was ready to hook me up with BJ. We did a quick three-way call and BJ gave me his cell phone number and said that I could call him any day of the week at any time. I already knew that this was the type of guy that the media hopes to get for an interview. I did not take much time to call back and conduct the interview. Half an hour later we had the conversation that is transcribed below.

Me: What made you want to go from being an athlete represented by an agent to an agent representing professional basketball players?

BJ Armstrong: It was to have a complete understanding of the business. Being a former player, I was very interested in understanding how this all works from a business standpoint: how teams are run, how decisions are made, and overall, how the operations of business are run. Having a complete understanding of the business of sports was what I was most interested in. I began to see the perspective of the role of sports representation. Honestly, I kind of stumbled into my current position as an agent; I didn’t seek it. It was just something I understand and I am happy to be in this profession.

Me: Take me through your recruiting process.

BJ Armstrong: One thing I definitely have understood is that there is no way to know everything and that there is no recruiting regiment. Every situation is different. You have to address what each client feels is most important. The recruiting process is really about delivering on each client’s concerns. What I have learned is how to function in an environment where there is really no certainty at all. There is no stability and there are never any guarantees. You must always be ready to go and function on your toes. I wish I could tell you that I had a brochure, but instead, it’s about having the phones open and to be ready to go from that point forward. An agent must always be able to address concerns quickly.

Me: A lot of people predicted that Derrick Rose would sign with Leon Rose and CAA. How long before you signed Rose did you start recruiting him, and what do you think made him go with WMG over a CAA?

BJ Armstrong: I have known Leon Rose for a long time, and Leon is excellent at what he does. Additionally, the people at CAA excel in what they do; I have the utmost respect for them. My signing of Derrick Rose was like anything in life, I think it was just luck. I played in Chicago. Derrick is from Chicago. I really wish I could put my finger on it and say that it was something we offered and something that other agencies did not offer. Luck and being in the right place at the right time are the only things I can attribute it to. I think the timing just worked out.

Me: Do you have any relationship with William Wesley? If so, what is your general impression of his role in professional basketball?

BJ Armstrong: I have known Wesley for over 20 years. I knew him back when I was playing in the late 80s. I have a great relationship with Wes and I have no problems with him whatsoever. He was a part of our family when I was playing in Chicago, when I was traded…I have always known him. He has been nothing but a friend to me since I entered the NBA. He’s been with us forever. It’s just Wes…he’s there. I still see him; he is everywhere. You see him at sporting events, venues, games.

Me: What is your response to David Falk’s recent comment that signing players is becoming less about what you have to offer to the client, and more about paying athletes and/or people close to them in order to represent them?

BJ Armstrong: I guess that is possible from his perspective. More importantly, he would have to answer it in more detail from his experiences. It is interesting that I have gone through the process of representing clients as an ex-athlete. I am certainly not naïve to think that the possibility of corruption isn’t there. I think David would really have to clarify his statement, though, because certainly you cannot say that it’s the only realm of possibility. It’s not the only way that things are done in this business.

Me: How important is it for an agent to understand the socioeconomic condition of a basketball player’s family?

BJ Armstrong: As a profession, we place a lot of emphasis on solving peoples problems. It’s very easy for me to identify a socioeconomic problem, but the solution is to help someone else understand how to fix the problem instead of solving it for him. What I’m most interested in doing is offering solutions that my clients can put into action by themselves. When I entered this business, my main goal was to help people become self-sufficient instead of do everything for them. I want to help them understand the business, what is fantasy and what is reality. Once you understand how the business works, then you have an opportunity to play the game. If you don’t understand how it works, then you can only identify the problems. If WMG doesn’t help its clients to become self-sufficient players, then we aren’t doing our jobs. I was very fortunate to come into sports representation with Arn Tellem; he has helped me understand the business in the same way that we help out clients find solutions to their problems. It was a very refreshing idea that he would help me help myself and not tell me what to do. We are about building men here. The most important idea is to help them get organized on the floor and off the floor. Anyone can tell you what the problems are, but helping them to function in this situation is a whole different thing.

Me: Would you ever represent someone with a history of baggage?

BJ Armstrong: I am not here to judge what has happened in a person’s life. All of our relationships are based on being forthright, radically honest, but more importantly, we are going to ask them to be responsible and be accountable. We are going to do our part by doing the very best that we can, but we are also going to ask our clients to do something as well. We ask our clients to work in the spirit of collaboration and cooperation. We ask them to be just as involved in this relationship as we are. With that, I have found that when people contribute to the success, you have a chance. If you want to be successful here, you have to have commitment from both sides. We work with these kids every day, we have to be honest with one another, and we must work under a spirit of collaboration and cooperation. Whatever happened in the past, that’s the past. This is a business of now. Now is all that we have.

Me: Have you had any contact with O.J. Mayo since he dropped Calvin Andrews and BDA, and what are your feelings on what has recently transpired?

BJ Armstrong: I have not been in contact with O.J. I am a person who deals with the facts. I don’t know what has happened. I have only heard about the situation in the same way as the general public. I only deal with what I know. There were a lot of things that were said, and from what I understand from just talking with the kids, O.J. is a terrific kid and I wish him all the best. I hope it gets resolved for everyone involved. I hope that we move on and focus on the positives instead of the negatives.

Me: What are some examples of post career opportunities that you have lined up for your current clients/athletes?

BJ Armstrong: I encourage these young men to educate themselves. They will find their interests and will have an opportunity to do whatever it is that they want to do. I notice that they are interested in a variety of things, but due to their extreme time commitment to basketball, their other interests that they have get put to the side. I always, first and foremost, have emphasized that our clients pursue their education, get their degree, and from there, move onto whatever field they choose. After education, we can go about our business of continuing the theme of being self-sufficient.

Me: What types of events, duties and/or roles as an agent have been different from what you might have thought before entering the business?

BJ Armstrong: That is very simple. This is a 24 hour job 7 days a week. You must be on your game all of the time. There is no 9-5, there is no set theme, there is no description. I find that very exciting. You get an opportunity to live in an uncertain environment. With this job, there is no correct or wrong way. You have to be ready to go, because you never know what is going to happen. You never know if a player gets injured, cut, is expected to go here but gets traded there. The uncertainty of the job encourages you to be incredibly organized and you have to be able to function in an environment where there is no certainty. I happen to rather enjoy having to always be ready to deal right now.

Me: Do you think former players like you, Lee Malchioni, etc. have an advantage in the sports agent industry because of your former playing experience on the big stage?

BJ Armstrong: My parents always told me this: Without the benefit of experience, you are not going to know what to do. Even today, I remember my parents telling me that. Experience is an advantage in any profession. Having a mentor gives someone a huge advantage in life. Until you touch a hot stove, there is no way to truly know how it burns. I take full responsibility for the stewardship of attracting people who want to reach their potential. When you are trying to reach that potential, you try to contact someone who has excelled in that profession. You don’t ask a librarian to help you become a Navy Seal. I wish that I could’ve asked someone like me the same questions when I was playing.

In the world of sports, B.J. Armstrong is not just known as a former sick complement player for the Michael Jordan led Chicago Bulls, nor as merely a mediocre analyst for ESPN. He has also made his way into the sports agent world, without the notice of many media entities. SLAM ONLINE recently talked to Armstrong, and spent a good amount of space covering his entry into this business by signing with Wasserman Media Group. If the length of the article scares you, here is my favorite question and answer combo from the interview:

Michael Tillery: Hypothetically, I’m 19-22, entering your office and looking to retain your services. What are you going to get across so I know I’m doing the right thing by signing with B.J. Armstrong?

BJ Armstrong: I’m here to listen to what you have to say. I’m not here to tell you about what I did or what it’s going to take to be a pro, I’m here to listen to what it is you want to do. I’ve done my thing. I’ve seen the so called best player in Michael Jordan. I give you no illusions to what this is really all about. There is no fantasy of “Come with me, I’m going to get you drafted” or “Come with me I’m going to do this or that.” My work starts when it gets rough. When you are up by twenty, everybody looks good. My game starts when a kid gets hurt or in a crisis type situation. That’s what I do. I’m not here to sell you a bag of goods. Telling you look how many players we’ve gotten drafted. People that get drafted in lotteries, that’s a blessing. I’m here to ask you what is it you want to do. Let’s get organized and execute the plan. If you don’t want to execute, then I’m not the person to deal with. I’m not much of a talker about selling points of what I can do for you. We know what we can do. We are going to work hard at it. It’s about attracting people with that same mentality. They are going to work hard and maximize their talents at this particular time in their life. I want people who want to be the best at what they do. I don’t want anyone telling me something illogical. I want people to give me information that is prevalent with logic and people that will work hard. We are going to stick by our clients 1000% no matter if they are the first pick in the draft or someone undrafted. It’s about integrity and excellence. We are going to do both. I get to the core of things. This is a very simple operation. We are going to go at it and we are going hard after it.
