Don’t tell Creative Artists Agency (CAA) that the company is #2 to anyone in any sport. They just don’t want to hear it. Even in baseball, where Scott Boras is known as the king of the diamond.

Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated reported earlier this week that in a phone interview with CAA baseball agent, Joe Urbon, the agent stated that Jason Bay is “the most complete player on the market.” Quite a bold statement by Mr. Urbon, who was well aware that some guy named Matt Holliday is also a free-agent going into the 2010 season. Should Bay be given the edge because he had to compete in a very tough AL East while Holliday went from a mediocre AL West to a soft NL Central? It is true that Holliday did struggle quite a bit in the AL. He only hit 1 homerun in the first month of the 2009 season

Boras’ response: “Holliday is the only young complete free agent player available.” I added the emphasis. Interesting sly tactic by Mr. Boras, who subtly noted that his client, Holliday is 29-years-old, while Bay is 31-years-old. You better believe that this factor, alone, drives up Holliday’s price.

I think it is smart for Urbon to make comparisons between Bay and Holliday. It will only drive up the price of his client. Let’s just hope that this is not an Urbon vs. Boras competition that stems from past experiences like the notorious case of Tacoby Bellsbury!

Yesterday, Liz Mullen of SportsBusiness Journal tweeted that O.J. Mayo, the Memphis Grizzlies guard going into his sophomore season in the NBA, has dropped both his marketing agency and contractual advisor. His representation for team contracts was Leon Rose of Creative Artists Agency. Mayo’s marketing agency was LRMR Marketing, a company that has LeBron James on the board.

Mullen tweeted that CAA confirmed Mayo’s termination of CAA, but we still do not know exactly why Mayo chose to start fresh on marketing and contractual help.

O.J. Mayo had a terrific rookie season that included averages of 18.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.2 assists in 38 minutes per game. And I am sure that many agents were in his ear throughout the year. That would be a solid reason for why Mayo would drop smaller agencies for names like CAA and LRMR. In this case, Mayo has dropped some big dogs, and we will wait and see who will be the replacements.

In case you have a short memory, Mayo was represented by BDA Sports before people found out about Rodney Guillory, a runner for BDA Sports and Calvin Andrews, gave money to Mayo while he was an NCAA student-athlete. Andrews was suspended by the NBPA and Mayo started looking for new representation. The rumor was that it was a race between Leon Rose and Andy Miller, with Rose winning out in the end.

And now we are once again left to wonder who Mayo will choose to become a part of his team of advisors.

With Malcolm Jenkins coming to an agreement with the New Orleans Saints late Sunday night, the holdout party of 7 dropped to a smaller table of 6. Those remaining unsigned, along with their representation are listed below:

Aaron Curry, LB, Seattle Seahawks (4th overall pick) – Octagon

Andre Smith, T, Cincinnati Bengals (6th overall pick) – GMG Sports (Alvin Keels)

Eugene Monroe, T, Jacksonville Jaguars (8th overall pick) – 320 Sports

B.J. Raji, DL, Green Bay Packers (9th overall pick) – Athletes First

Michael Crabtree, WR, San Francisco 49ers (10th overall pick) – Maximum Sports (Eugene Parker)

Aaron Maybin, DE, Buffalo Bills (11th overall pick) – BEST (Blue Equity)

Creative Artists Agency (CAA), the company with the most amount of first-round selections (9), has all of its clients in camp with Malcolm Jenkins putting pen to paper on a 5-year, $19 million deal. While the rest of the agencies listed are hoping to get exorbitant contracts for their clients, to use the figures in their recruitment packages for the 2010 class of draft-eligible players, CAA can boast that not only did the company have the highest number of first-round picks, but got them all signed before other big companies like Athletes First and Octagon, small companies with 1 first-round pick like 320 Sports, and signed their boys for good money. You better believe that Todd France of FAAM will be using the same strategy on the recruitment trail over the next year.

Which method will win out? The agents who have their clients holdout/threaten to sit out a year well into training camp, or those who get their boys signed for good money and get their boys into camp before the middle of August?

The signing deadline for players drafted in the 2009 MLB ...

The signing deadline for players drafted in the 2009 MLB Rule 4 Draft is less than two weeks away. In fact, players and their advisors have 12 more days to come to agreement with MLB organizations. If a deal is not struck by midnight of August 17th, that player will either return to college, go to college for the first time (if a high school draftee), or play independent ball for a year.

A majority of first round selections are still waiting on that magic number before they sign an agreement to play professionally. 12 players have signed…20 to go. The last player to sign was Jared Mitchell (CAA client). Undoubtedly, not every player will sign, but you can expect a lot of deals to get done with hours or minutes left before the actual deadline.

The draft is 50 rounds long and not ALL about the first round. Many players outside of the first round have not yet signed, either. For instance, 6 of the 17 first round supplemental picks are still waiting to hear a number they like (Paxton, Davis, Skaggs, Owings, Boxberger, and Scheppers).

First Round Picks

Nationals. Stephen Strasburg, rhp Boras Corp. Unsigned. Boras wants $50 million.

Mariners. Dustin Ackley, of Boras Corp. Unsigned. Boras wants roughly $9.5 million.

Padres. Donavan Tate, of Boras Corp. Unsigned. Boras already has enough on his hands with Strasburg and Ackley. Add Donavan, and it’s quite a party.

First round NFL deals are moving along slower than a snail’s pace. We saw this coming, though. That said, New Orleans Saints fans are not happy that their first round pick, Malcolm Jenkins, continues to sit out of camp. Their unhappiness is amplified by the fact that Brian Orakpo (picked before Jenkins) and Brian Cushing (picked after Jenkins) have already signed with their respective teams and have been reporting to camp.

Jenkins, Orakpo, and Cushing are all represented by the crew over at CAA, so as long as the Jenkins deal falls somewhere in between Orakpo’s and Cushing’s, CAA should not take a hit in the image department (something that rival agency, Athletes First, is apparently waiting on to use on the recruiting tour for next year’s class of rookies). Maybe CAA wants the contract to be front-loaded. I discussed the benefits of a large 3-year total (3YT) earlier today, which could be a vital negotiating point between the parties.

At least Saints GM, Mickey Loomis, is encouraged by the fact that he has a history of working out deals with CAA’s football agents.

I’d like to think that there is nothing true about this post, but I am not naive enough to believe that it is far from reality. The post was written by Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com. He claims that the reason there have been so few 2009 1st round NFL Draft selections signing is because the agents for the players selected are in a battle to see who can one-up the other. I have no problem if this is a plan to get their 2009 clients the best deals possible, but if the motive is to have ammo to fight other agents off in recruiting 2010 draft clients, well then I feel bad for their current clients.

Apparently there is a big battle between Athletes First and CAA, and both firms are waiting to see what Eugene Parker does with Michael Crabtree’s contract (pick #10). The agencies with first round picks should be careful not to extend this process too long. It is okay when a few players hold out of camp, but if practically the entire first round of picks is sitting on the sidelines, we will start hearing more cries for a slotting system like the NBA uses on first round picks. And NBA agents often do not take a cut on the first contracts of first round picks. NFL agents would lose a lot of sleep over that idea.

After reading the article I wrote yesterday on CAA’s acquisition ...

After reading the article I wrote yesterday on CAA’s acquisition of CSMG’s President, Henry Thomas, and all of his clients, I realized that I did not spend enough time talking about the implications of this move on the sports agent industry as a whole. CSMG wis probably gone for good, but what exactly does it mean for CAA?

Let’s look at CAA’s basketball division, first. Before hiring Henry Thomas, CAA already boasted three strong basketball agents: Leon Rose, Andre Buck, and Steven Heumann. Heumann mostly deals with the high profile overseas players and those born outside of the U.S. who now play in the NBA (think Omri Casspi). Andre Buck is up-and-coming, and serves as the primary agent for guys like Jason Thompson, Aaron Brooks, and Renaldo Balkman. Then there is Leon Rose, who has LeBron James, O.J. Mayo, Jonny Flynn, Allen Iverson, Richard Hamilton…the list goes on. The key thing that I notice with Henry Thomas’s arrival is that LBJ and D-Wade are now under the same roof. The two most marketable basketball players (you can throw Dwight Howard in at #3 in my book) are at CAA. Interestingly, though, LBJ has his own marketing company, so CAA, the sports marketing juggernaut, does not reap rewards from that account. D-Wade will bring in some nice profits, though. He recently switched from repping Converse to the Jordan Brand (both owned by Nike).

In yesterday’s post, I alluded to Jason Belzer’s Sports Agency Power Rankings. The list was created a year ago, and I think that he would agree with me that the pecking order should be changed. I believe that the top 4 are now CAA, WMG, Octagon, and BEST. WMG, Octagon, and BEST are not all that far from one another, but all 3 are a giant step below CAA, in my opinion.

A key question is: How does one compete? One thing is sure, you are not going to beat CAA by playing its game. The company does not have unlimited resources, but something close to it. They have more connections to producers, directors, potential sponsors, etc, so you can’t out-promise Creative Artists Agency on providing more avenues outside of the field/court. What you can beat CAA at (possibly) is personal care. CAA is the largest sports agency in terms of quality of clients and track-record of agents, but they are not interested in players who are going to be taken Day 2 of the NFL Draft, beyond the 10th round of the MLB Rule 4 Draft, or un-drafted basketball players (for the most part). In fact, even if you are a 2nd round NFL draft pick, do you want to be splitting time with Matt Stafford? If you are a 4th round pick, will you get the same attention as Derek Jeter? LeBron Jame and Dwayne Wade might get a few more phone calls then a 2nd round NBA draft pick.

A lot of athletes crave attention. They also want someone that they can relate to. Personal relationships mean a lot in this business. Just because CAA is growing by the day and seems like it is a company that is beyond competition, does not mean that it is immune to losing some big potential clients to a boutique firm that knows what it is doing and can connect with the athletes. Don’t fight CAA at its strengths, find out what your own strengths are and use those to impress future clients.

All of that being said, CAA sure got a lot stronger with its latest acquisition.

What do Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Devin Harris, Udonis Haslem, ...

What do Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Devin Harris, Udonis Haslem, Dee Brown, Anthony Parker, Ronnie Brewer, Michael Finley, Shaun Livingston, Quinton Ross, Denham Brown, Marcus Taylor, Loukas Mavrokefalidis, and Marcellus Sommerville all have in common? Their primary agent is Henry Thomas, formerly of CSMG. This weekend, it was reported (via Twitter) that Thomas will be leaving the Chicago-based company to join the ranks of the most powerful agency in the United States: Creative Artists Agency. As reported, all of the clients listed at the top of this post will be following Thomas to CAA, where Thomas will be managed by Leon Rose.

Am I surprised by the move? No. Almost two year’s ago, I asked on this blog, Is CSMG Still The Place To Be? The company was just coming off of terminating its CEO, laying off several employees, having its founder step down as chairman of the board of directors and had a signed separation agreement with one of its major NFL player agents. Thereafter, the CSMG football division vanished. The company was left with a strong baseball and basketball division…until Octagon bought out CSMG’s very strong baseball client list and the agents working on their behalf. Roughly twenty CSMG employees and over one-hundred-and-forty baseball players switched hands in the deal.

Since the deal between CSMG and Octagon in October 2008, CSMG had one thing to focus on: basketball. The company’s website currently reflects that fact. Dwyane Wade’s likeness is all over the homepage, the client sites listed are Henry Thomas’s players, and the only clients listed are those playing basketball. Will CSMG close up shop for good now that Thomas is leaving for CAA? The company has had internal issues for quite some time now, and Thomas’s departure may just be the final step to dismantling an entity that was once #6 on Jason Belzer’s Sports Agency Power Rankings.

As listed on CSMG’s website, there are only two Executive Officers: Henry Thomas (President) and Ginger Gordon (Chief Financial Officer). No need for a CFO if there is no President. And CAA grows again..

First Andre Smith dropped Alvin Keels and GMG Sports for ...

First Andre Smith dropped Alvin Keels and GMG Sports for Rick Smith and Priority Sports. Rumors circulated that Andre did this to raise his draft stock, because many teams felt more comfortable if Andre was with Priority over GMG. As we all know, Andre went back to Alvin Keels, and Rick Smith/Priority Sports have still not forgotten (and may file suit).

More recently, Anquan Boldin dropped Drew Rosenhaus for Tom Condon and Creative Artists Agency (CAA). And yesterday, Cardinals GM Rod Graves expressed his excitement to work with Boldin’s new agents.

Asked if there would be enough money under the salary cap to sign Boldin this year, Graves said, “It will have some challenges. There’s certainly cause for some give and take and creativity on both sides, but Tom’s been noted for that. Again, I just look forward to sitting with him and we’ll find out where we are at that point.”

I never saw a quote like that from Graves when Rosenhaus was on the other side of the negotiation table.

It seems as though GMs and other team personnel definitely play favorites when it comes to sports agents. While Graves and others might place Condon over Rosenhaus, does it necessarily mean anything? As long as the agent gets his client the best deal possible, quotes in an article don’t mean a thing to me.

Neil Stratton runs an excellent web site, InsideTheLeague.com. Daily, Neil ...

Neil Stratton runs an excellent web site, InsideTheLeague.com. Daily, Neil discusses the latest agent/player rumors in the NFL. Also, right around NFL draft time, Neil provides solid information regarding what players are signed with which agencies. Recently, he put together a list of agencies ranked by how many of their clients were drafted in April. Leading the pack was Athletes First, with a total of 16 clients drafted in the 7 rounds. Athletes First had a good spread through the rounds.

In second was Octagon, followed by Priority Sports. Both agencies had a good spread. After those three came CAA, who was extremely top heavy, as I have noted in prior posts. Not a single one of CAA’s 11 clients drafted were picked later than the third round.

Neil also breaks down the agencies into 3 categories: Major, Mid-Major, and Boutique. Goalline Sports, National Sports, and PlayersRep led the Mid-Majors with 5 clients of each agency selected. The Boutique agency with the most success was Metro Sports, who had a 5th rounder and two 6th rounders.
