The NFL is back in business, college football season is quickly approaching (Go Gators!), and the NBA looks like it is going to go through a much more painful process than the NFL just experienced. I start teaching a brand new class called Sport Agency Management at Indiana University Bloomington near the end of the month. The beauty is that I do not have to move to Bloomington, Indiana to teach it – the beauty of technology (specifically webcams and sophisticated learning software). Sports Agent Blog has been becoming more and more popular every month. If you have any ideas as to how we can make it better, please let us know. Here are some stories I missed over the past week:

Football

Some athletes don’t ask much out of their agents. Negotiate their professional contract, take your cut, and go on with your lives. Others really enjoy the personal attention and expect an agent to negotiate the pro deal, but also look for endorsements, help with the selection of a financial planner, development of a social media strategy, and even providing assistance in relocation.

Think about a high school baseball player who was just selected by a professional baseball organization. He is at the ripe age of 18-years-old, may not receive his collegiate degree for a long time (or may never go to a university), and just got a fat signing bonus that he does not know what to do with. A financial planner helps. But also, what happens once that player moves up the organization and has to start juggling finances with excelling on the field, and now also has the extra burden of finding a place to live? As an agent, will you be able to help him?

Dynasty has created strong relationships with athlete relocation firms that help athletes make the move to new areas without any charge to the athlete or agent. One of those firms is The Dingman Group, owned by California native, Chris Dingman. Not only is it important to have a guy like Dingman in your corner for when an athlete first makes the big league team, but it is especially vital if perhaps the athlete is traded mid-season. He may have to be in a brand new city the next day. This is a period where one slip-up could force the athlete to switch agents.

Guys like Dingman are there for us agents to help build a stronger platter of services for our clients and potential clients. Again, the best part of the service, is that it is free. As the Daily Pilot reports,

In the end, he just wants to provide the best for [his clients]. And he does it for free.

Yes, The Dingman Group makes money from real estate or other company referrals, but there are times when those don’t produce income. He’s still going to work because he knows helping could lead to another client.

Dingman already suggested we start looking into places for Pete Parise for when he makes it to St. Louis. He suggested a former Cardinal player’s place (name will remain confidential for now). That’s the type of guy I like…someone planning in advance.

A large part of being a sports agent is being trusted and accountable. Your clients will want to know that they can come to you with questions, get honest answers, and that those answers will be presented with their best interests in mind. There are a lot of large sports agencies and even some boutique agencies who wish to offer full-service capabilities. There are variations of what that actually means. Some attempt to handle absolutely everything in-house, whether it be financial planning, estate planning, retirement planning, philanthropy, etc. Others only offer a few services outright. I have found it very rewarding to use the plenty of connections that I have made in the past few years to our clients’ advantage, and offer them a dinner plate of options when it comes to the services they may need. Instead of pretending that we can offer our clients the best possible product in every area possible, we are humble enough to create strong relationships with those at the top of their industries so that we may refer our clients to them once a particular service is needed.

Dynasty has cultivated strong bonds with companies that range from providing private jets, to bodyguards, to training facilities. Another area that we have forged strong bonds is in athlete relocation. Athletes are constantly on the move. One second they have a stable job at X team. The next day, they find their names on the transaction wire because they were traded or released. There are a few companies that have stepped in to ease the process of moving. Dynasty is lucky to be on friendly terms with two of them.

The Dingman Group, headed by Chris Dingman, matches athletes with a real estate expert from their distinguished Nationwide Family, and ensures a seamless and successful relocation. Whether the need is to sell, purchase or lease a home, Chris’ priority is to recommend a sound financial decision while providing the highest level of service and attention. The real estate experts are pre-screened and interviewed to ensure they possess a track record of excellence and the skills necessary to enable a smooth transition. The service provided does not cost the athlete a penny.

Sport Star Relocation, headed by Ed Kaminsky, offers very similar services as The Dingman Group. Additionally, its lending branch can arrange discounted loans for athletes and executives almost anywhere in the U.S. Kaminsky is listed in the top 100 real estate agents in the country. Sport Star Relocation and Mr. Kaminsky were recently highlighted in a video clip showing an L.A. house to our boy, Jordan Farmar.
