On September 16, 2010, I researched and provided some facts regarding Chris Hawkins’ background. He was responsible for purchasing A.J. Green’s jersey for $1,000, which set the Georgia wide-receiver back four games at the beginning of the 2010 season. But that’s not the end of his connections to student-athletes. Hawkins played college ball at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and has reportedly contacted several sports agents about potentially representing UNC players in the 2011 draft. At least one agent was supposedly on the NCAA’s radar – Peter Schaffer of All Pro Sports & Entertainment.

Schaffer, who was invited to UNC spring practice to educate players about NCAA rules regarding agents, has admitted to having dealings with Hawkins. Schaffer has signed UNC seniors Johnny White and Kendrick Burney to represent leading up to the NFL Draft. NFLDraftScout.com ranks Burney as the 14th best CB in the nation, and projects him being drafted in the 4-5th round. The same website ranks white as the 42nd best RB, and does not believe he will be drafted at all.

After Josh Luchs spoke to Sports Illustrated about his own unscrupulous recruiting tactics, Schaffer provided his insight on the matter to John Henderson of The Denver Post. Henderson believes that Schaffer is one of the “good guys.” Schaffer talks a lot about the “bad guys” at various school seminars, including the one he allegedly gave at UNC spring practice.

There are other UNC players who have already chosen their representation, as well.

Greg Little is represented by Octagon.

Da’Norris Searcy is represented by Robert Brown of Universal Sports Management.

Alan Pelc is represented by GAME Sports & Entertainment (even though the NFLPA has issued a disciplinary complaint against Ian Greengross).

Robert Quinn and Bruce Carter have signed with Carl Carey (who received his Ph.D from UNC in 2000) of Champion Pro Consulting.

Deunta Williams signed with Maximum Sports (who also signed UNC’s Marvin Austin).

Meanwhile, what’s going on with North Carolina’s Secretary of State, Elaine Marshall? Maybe she should give a call to someone in the state of Arkansas.

Here’s the tie to the sports agent world - The Spotlight On Kenny Rodgers Cannot Help Ian Greengross – surprising how few people are talking about that mess.

But for a while, the rest of the sports community can take their focus away from us agents, and start talking about some other common figures when it comes to college recruiting – runners, boosters…and the FBI?

The FBI wants to know if young men are being shopped to colleges. – TMZ

Cam Newton told a Mississippi State recruiter that he picked Auburn because “the money was too much.” – Joe Schad, ESPN

John Bond never actually spoke to Kenny Rodgers. – Ty Duffy, The Big Lead

On November 27, 2009, Cecil Newton was at a hotel in Starkville, Miss. and asked two Mississippi State coaches about the payment for his son to attend Mississippi State. - AP + ESPN

Cecil Newton admitted to talking with an ex-Mississippi State University player about payments in return for Cam Newton’s commitment to play football at Mississippi State. – WSB Atlanta

Cecil Newton’s solicitation of money from Mississippi State may be all that is needed for Auburn to suffer. – Clay Travis, AOL FanHouse

Kenny Rodgers texted a Mississippi State booster with a payment plan that would push Cam Newton to play for the Bulldogs. – Mark Schlabach, Chris Low and Pat Forde, ESPN

I have been staying away from doing my own reporting, because much like my brethren at other websites, I am only receiving accounts of hearsay.

It’s like a Shabbat Shalom: Friday Wrap-Up a day early. Don’t worry, Friday’s wrap-up will be here for you to digest tomorrow.

Right before I was scheduled to give a speech to the Indiana University Sport Marketing Alliance this past Thursday, I was told that former Florida Gator and current Auburn Tiger, Cam Newton, might have accepted money prior to enrolling at Auburn. The entire conversation started with John Bond, a former Mississippi State quarterback, stating that when Newton was deciding which school he would attend after doing a one-year stint at Blinn College (a junior college), a man by the name of Kenny Rogers was going around asking for money in return for Newton’s commitment to play.

Newton had vehemently denied that he ever asked for or received money to play at Auburn or that he was ever involved in soliciting money from any other educational institution. Had Rodgers crafted this plan on his own, without ever informing Newton or his family? If so, did he think no one would ever find out about it?

Whether Rodgers had authority to act on behalf of Newton or was acting on his own accord without Newton’s knowledge, we at least know that this man is up to some shady business. His “job” entails matching football prospects with college programs, and works with Elite Football Preparation, a company that places athlete prospects in football camps in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Illinois.

What if I told you that Rodgers had clear ties to an NFL Players Association certified Contract Advisor? Ian Greengross (here he is on Twitter) represents Greg Hardy, Titus Brown, Sam Hurd, Trindon Holliday, Amobi Okoye, John Denney, Brandon Fields, Trevard Lindley, Cyril Obiozor, Traye Simmons, and his biggest client is Darren McFadden. His company, GAME Sports & Entertainment, is based in Chicago, Illinois, which is the same home of Rodgers’ Elite Football Preparation.

Pete Thamel of the New York Times reported that Greengross and Rodgers not only share the same city, but also share a joint bank account under the name “Greengross Athletic Management Enterprises.” Rogers has also recently been on the record stating that Greengross pays him $2,000 a month.

On November 5, the NFLPA’s Committee on Agent Regulation and Discipline (CARD) issued a disciplinary complaint against Ian Greengross for violating numerous provisions of the NFLPA’s Agent Regulations while recruiting and representing players, and for the actions of Kenny Rogers, who is identified as Greengross’ recruiter. Greengross is responsible for the actions of Rodgers if his conduct violates the Regulations. Rogers is alleged to have misrepresented to prospective clients that he was an NFLPA employee, a Club official, and an official from a testing service, in an effort to recruit them. He also is alleged to have recruited players while they were signed to agency contracts with other agents.

Greengross has already hired an experienced lawyer – David Cornwell. My guess is that Cornwell’s expertise might enable Greengross to endure a less severe penalty than if he had gone with an attorney who is not as familiar with the NFLPA’s Agent Regulations, but I doubt even Cornwell will be able to keep his client away from any discipline.

Trindon Holliday has chosen to be the guinea pig of this year’s off-season, becoming the first 2010 drafted player to sign, signing a four-year, $2.713 million contract with the Houston Texans. In the NFL, rookie salaries for players drafted in the earlier rounds (especially first round) are typically highly competitive with essentially unlimited upside to earning potential.

As Holliday is the first to sign in 2010, an interesting aspect of this dilemma is when to sign. As an agent, do you advise your client to wait and potentially holdout or take a competitive offer based upon historical circumstances?

It’s difficult, as there are many indirect variables that could affect a given year’s draft scene. Signing early could also trigger an upward or downward swing for all picks above the 197th spot, benefiting or hurting many athletes drafted in early rounds. The NFL is in stark contrast to that of the NBA where picks are slotted, with contract values descending as picks fall down the draft board regardless of the agent’s negotiation skills or leverage.

As compared to last year, with draft slot 197 (in the 6th round) going to the Dallas Cowboys pick of Stephen Hodge, a linebacker out of TCU who received a $1.847 million contract for four years and only a $97,000 signing bonus, 2010 seems to be appreciating. Holliday is receiving $866,000 more than he would have last year – assuming all things equal.

His agent, Ian Greengross, made the right decision, because a contract would have to be signed at some point and waiting could be detrimental financially as others drafted well above pick 197 would eventually be signed, potentially hindering Holliday’s earning ability. On the same note, the longer the holdout, the less time the client has to prepare on the field with his new team for his inaugural season in the NFL.

If agents are to learn one thing from holding-out, it is the shining example of Michael Crabtree. As the tenth overall pick last year, he waited until October 7, 2009 to sign with the 49ers. His agent, Eugene Parker, took his position on the matter – disrupting a franchise and to some extent the integrity of the league. The money was there; it was waiting. Crabtree’s people were reckless – even contemplating the idea of having Crabtree sit out 2009 to be eligible for the 2010 NFL Draft.

Greengross was obviously aware of the circumstances. He knew the situation and advised well on the matter. As a lower pick, signing early just makes sense – it locks in the athlete’s contract, allows the athlete to begin involvement with the team, and benchmarks later picks against the contract and the respective signing bonus.

While it is ultimately a mutual decision between the client, his family, and the agent, one has to consider the fact that if an athlete waits, the risk only increases that a contract further down the line in the draft will be offered and signed – leaving the athlete, your client, and the athlete’s family in an unfortunate situation.

Before the draft, Forbes writer, Tom Van Riper, dug up some interesting information from the NFLPA: 23 separate agencies represented the first-round class in 2000. By 2007, that number was reduced by just one. This year, though, the number shrunk to just 18 agencies representing the 32 players projected to go in the first round by Scouts, Inc. CAA Football has five players, while Roanoke, Ind.-based Maximum Sports Management has four.

Scouts, Inc. was on the money. Eighteen agencies are listed above. CAA and Maximum Sports each got one more player selected than was hypothesized by the website. Is it a bad thing that only only eighteen agencies are represented among the top 31 picks or that two agencies combined account for one-third of the players taken in the First Round? It depends on who you ask.

CAA and Maximum Sports have been partying in their spare time (when they are not on the phone trying to hammer out fine details on each of their clients’ contracts), but smaller agencies are wondering what they can do to break into this tough industry, and more precisely, the toughest sport in the profession. Does it shock you that a large agency like Rosenhaus Sports Representation barely got a single player selected in the first round? Miami did have a terrible year, so that may explain it.

Industry consolidation can be a beautiful thing if you are either the agency that is eating up the competition or an agency that is bought out by one of the behemoths. If you are an agency stuck on the outside, do you start to become worried about your chances of breaking into the coveted First Round of the NFL Draft?
