Lawrence had been a Contract Advisor at Maximum Sports Management, the agency that represents NFL stars including Larry Fitzgerald, Tracy Porter, Ndamukong Suh, Hines Ward, Greg Jennings, and many other fantastic NFL players. He was a shooting guard at Seattle University and remained a big part of the city thereafter, even trying to keep the Seattle SuperSonics in his hometown.

I was never very close with Lawrence, but we did happen to exchange Tweets regarding BYU guard Jimmer Fredette just a few days ago. He absolutely loved the way Fredette crossed someone over. While I initially took slight offense to Lawrence calling Fredette “the white boy”, how could I stay upset when he responded to me saying, “yea!! The white boy! And he has been killing!!!”

The following message was released by Maximum Sports Management concerning Lawrence’s untimely passing:

Green’s jersey for $1,000, which set the Georgia wide-receiver back four games at the beginning of the 2010 season. But that’s not the end of his connections to student-athletes. Hawkins played college ball at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and has reportedly contacted several sports agents about potentially representing UNC players in the 2011 draft. At least one agent was supposedly on the NCAA’s radar – Peter Schaffer of All Pro Sports & Entertainment.

Schaffer, who was invited to UNC spring practice to educate players about NCAA rules regarding agents, has admitted to having dealings with Hawkins. Schaffer has signed UNC seniors Johnny White and Kendrick Burney to represent leading up to the NFL Draft. NFLDraftScout.com ranks Burney as the 14th best CB in the nation, and projects him being drafted in the 4-5th round. The same website ranks white as the 42nd best RB, and does not believe he will be drafted at all.

After Josh Luchs spoke to Sports Illustrated about his own unscrupulous recruiting tactics, Schaffer provided his insight on the matter to John Henderson of The Denver Post. Henderson believes that Schaffer is one of the “good guys.” Schaffer talks a lot about the “bad guys” at various school seminars, including the one he allegedly gave at UNC spring practice.

There are other UNC players who have already chosen their representation, as well.

Greg Little is represented by Octagon.

Da’Norris Searcy is represented by Robert Brown of Universal Sports Management.

Alan Pelc is represented by GAME Sports & Entertainment (even though the NFLPA has issued a disciplinary complaint against Ian Greengross).

Robert Quinn and Bruce Carter have signed with Carl Carey (who received his Ph.D from UNC in 2000) of Champion Pro Consulting.

Deunta Williams signed with Maximum Sports (who also signed UNC’s Marvin Austin).

Meanwhile, what’s going on with North Carolina’s Secretary of State, Elaine Marshall? Maybe she should give a call to someone in the state of Arkansas.

Marvin Austin was front and center in the 2010 UNC Football Scandal. He is now at the head of the Maximum Sports Management 2010 Draft Class. The company is currently celebrating having 6 players selected to the 2010 Pro Bowl (Jairus Byrd, Steven Jackson, Larry Fitzgerald, Jason peters, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, and Adrian Wilson), but be sure that Roosevelt Barnes, Jr. is also quite happy about the Marvin Austin signing. Even though Austin sat out all of the 2010 season, NFL Draft Scout lists him as the 3rd best Defensive Tackle in the country and projects Austin as a 2nd round pick. If he impresses scouts at his Pro Day and/or the NFL Combine, expect him to jump back to a 1st round rating.

At least one person thinks that John Blake (former UNC assistant football coach) could have had something to do with Austin’s selection of Barnes and Maximum Sports. We already know about the connection between Blake and Gary Wichard, but what about a potential tie between Blake and Maximum Sports? Here is a Tweet from September 22, 2010, made by ESPN’s Bruce Feldman:

I assume that J-Clowney is Jadeveon Clowney, a 5-star Defensive End from South Carolina. That guy Suh, Ndamukong Suh, is a Maximum Sports client. Did Blake ever make that recruiting pitch? Did he influence Suh’s decision to sign with Maximum Sports? What else could he have been referring to when he stated, “I got him right?” How could he possibly be taking credit for Suh’s success at Nebraska?

My thought is that it has nothing to do with a pitch to deliver Suh to Maximum Sports. Blake was probably recruiting Suh to Nebraska while Suh was still at Grant High School in Portland, Oregon. Prior to becoming a coach at UNC, Blake was the D-Line coach at the University of Nebraska from 2004-2006. But I do see why that recruiting pitch makes certain people wonder what Blake was trying to sell.

Now that we have this awesome, free resource that displays agent information for almost every player selected in the 2010 NFL Draft (click here if you haven’t seen it yet, or click the link at the top right of any page on SportsAgentBlog.com), what should we do with it? First, it is a great repository of information if you ever need to find out who to contact in the case that you need to reach a particular player. It also may help individuals decide where they want to apply for an internship. Additionally, this list introduced me to a few firm websites that I did not know existed – I have since added those sites to our huge Agencies database.

My favorite part of it is that I get to analyze the draft, looking at the winners and losers.

By all accounts, Gary Wichard had a successful draft. However, if a sports agent stock market existed (that’s a cool idea..), his stock would have been on a decline over the past week. In January, I noted that Wichard had 5 potential first round picks, and that CAA should take notice. Wichard ended up with 1 first rounder, which is definitely something to celebrate about, but is still no where near CAA. Three of Wichard’s clients were 2nd rounders and one (Everson Griffen) dropped to the fourth round. With the draft over, Wichard will have to put some focus on his former client, Brian Bosworth, suing him.

As for the aforementioned CAA…the company still dominates the sport of football. While CAA represented less draft-eligible players this year (by choice) than is normal for them – last year they had 11 draft picks, all of whom were taken round 3 or higher. All six of their clients were drafted in the first round, including the 1st and 3rd overall picks. Six of the last seven #1 overall picks have been represented by the duo of Tom Condon and Ben Dogra, who run CAA Football.

Eugene Parker and Roosevelt Barnes of Maximum Sports also had quite a day. They had up the 2nd and 4th overall picks. While they were not limited to strictly the 1st round, a-la-CAA, Maximum Sports had a total of 8 clients drafted throughout the first four rounds (nothing later).

Was 2010 Malik Hafeez Shareef‘s coming out party? He only represents one drafted player, but that player happens to be the #7 overall pick and former Florida Gator, Joe Haden. Will this be the start of a successful practice for Shareef or will he be a one-hit wonder?

Last year, PlayersRep was listed as a “Mid-Major” sports agency. With a first round pick in Devin McCourty (#27 overall), is PlayersRep now in the ring with the big boys? The company had a total of 6 players drafted.

There are many more stories deep within the list of players and their representation. What are some of the things that stuck out to you?

This is the first SportsAgentBlog.com post by Rand J. Getlin – President & Founder of Synrgy Sports Consulting.

What do Deion Sanders, Michael Crabtree and Dez Bryant all have in common? Aside from the fact that they’ve all eaten dinner at chateau de Primetime, they’re all clients of super agent Eugene Parker.

What do Mike Jenkins, Chris Houston, and Shawn Springs all have in common? They’ve all fired super agent Eugene Parker.

Actually, Maximum Sports Management, which is comprised of Parker and Roosevelt Barnes, has been fired more than 15 times since 2005.

You all set, fellas? How come these dudes keep leaving you?

By most accounts, Parker and Barnes work tirelessly for their players. Their client list coupled with their long and distinguished career is more than enough proof that they do a lot right (I mean, at the very least Parker knows how to dress for success). Still, when guys have been fired by that many clients in that short a timeframe, it’s obvious they’re doing a few things wrong as well.

Unless you interview all of those players, along with Parker and Barnes, you won’t get a clear picture of what led to those firings. Athletes get rid of their agents for all kinds of reasons. Some logical, some ridiculous (shouts to Andre Smith). In either case, the firing indicates that for some reason, the athlete and the agent weren’t a match.

Parker and Barnes aren’t the only hyper-successful agents bleeding clients though.

Creative Artists Agency is widely regarded as the most dominant force in the game. Their client list is bananas. They represent Peyton and Eli Manning, Adrian Peterson, Mario Williams, Patrick Willis, and Antonio Gates among many others. They’ve got a team of agents who are superstars in their own right and every year the draft classes they land are the envy of the industry. Needless to say, the bank accounts of the agents over there aren’t in danger of being overdrawn.

With everything they’ve got going for them, every NFL athlete should jump at the opportunity to have CAA represent them, right? Perhaps, but any athlete interested in being represented by Condon and Co. should probably ask this question:

CAA, with so much going for you, how in the world do you get kicked to the curb so often?

Since 2005, the agents that work at CAA have been fired more than any other group in the industry. They’ve been axed by at least 20 of their athletes in that time, including Thomas Jones, Michael Clayton, Will Allen, Roy Williams, Marc Colombo, Antrel Rolle, and Julius Jones.

For an early first round guy, even with those firings, you’d be out of your mind not to consider them. For guys falling out of the second round, you might want to give another agency some thought.

At CAA, you’d be buried on a depth chart stacked with 1st rounders. You have to realize that no matter how many times an agent tells you you’re his top priority and he’ll do everything in his power to keep you happy, he’s about his business. The guys over at CAA aren’t any different. If you sign with them and they have ten players who earn them more dough than you, you can’t really be salty when you end up on the b-list.

You know how it goes; it’s like the girl who’s only dated athletes but tells you she’s not with you because you’re on the squad. “I’d be with you if you worked at a gas station baby.” C’mon son! You have to know, as soon as that ACL pops she’ll be wearing your teammate’s jersey. Don’t fall for the okie-doke. Like any agent, she’s going to do what’s best for her. So to circle back to the original question – shouldn’t every NFL athlete jump at the opportunity to have CAA represent them – in the words of Borat, maybe “not so much for you.”

Let’s be clear. I’m not picking on these guys. Lots of agents have been fired by a higher percentage of their players than the folks at CAA and Maximum. The fact that these two firms had more clients fire them than most agents ever get hired by, is more a testament to their position atop the industry than an indictment on their ability to hold their clients down. Both agencies are strong options for elite NFL prospects.

Having said that, the ultimate goal is to get athletes to realize that even the sexiest agencies out there have issues that need to be analyzed carefully. Athletes would be wise to dig as deep as possible into the backgrounds of the agents pursuing them before signing an SRA.

And players, take my word for it, just asking the agent why they got fired doesn’t fly. Newsflash, these guys make a living being slick and a lot of them will sell you a dream if you let them. Just keep in mind, everyone’s going to spin the story to fit their own needs. At the very least, make sure you get both sides.

Call the NFLPA and ask questions about your prospective agents. How many times has agent X been fired? How many times has he been brought up on disciplinary charges and why?

Ask the agent every one of these questions, record the answers, then ask some more.

Knowledge is power and the devil is in the details. You can never have enough information on the people who will be handling the business side of your career.

Don’t listen to me though, take it from Hov, who’s earned a few bucks in his career:

With Malcolm Jenkins coming to an agreement with the New Orleans Saints late Sunday night, the holdout party of 7 dropped to a smaller table of 6. Those remaining unsigned, along with their representation are listed below:

Aaron Curry, LB, Seattle Seahawks (4th overall pick) – Octagon

Andre Smith, T, Cincinnati Bengals (6th overall pick) – GMG Sports (Alvin Keels)

Eugene Monroe, T, Jacksonville Jaguars (8th overall pick) – 320 Sports

B.J. Raji, DL, Green Bay Packers (9th overall pick) – Athletes First

Michael Crabtree, WR, San Francisco 49ers (10th overall pick) – Maximum Sports (Eugene Parker)

Aaron Maybin, DE, Buffalo Bills (11th overall pick) – BEST (Blue Equity)

Creative Artists Agency (CAA), the company with the most amount of first-round selections (9), has all of its clients in camp with Malcolm Jenkins putting pen to paper on a 5-year, $19 million deal. While the rest of the agencies listed are hoping to get exorbitant contracts for their clients, to use the figures in their recruitment packages for the 2010 class of draft-eligible players, CAA can boast that not only did the company have the highest number of first-round picks, but got them all signed before other big companies like Athletes First and Octagon, small companies with 1 first-round pick like 320 Sports, and signed their boys for good money. You better believe that Todd France of FAAM will be using the same strategy on the recruitment trail over the next year.

Which method will win out? The agents who have their clients holdout/threaten to sit out a year well into training camp, or those who get their boys signed for good money and get their boys into camp before the middle of August?

Last year, I broke down how the first round of the NFL Draft went down. CAA led the pack with 6 clients selected in the first round. CAA was followed by Maximum Sports (5), and Octagon, BEST, FAME, and ProFiles Sports (all with 2 clients selected). Having 6 first rounders would be cause for celebration for any agency, even CAA, who has some of the most well known NFLPA licensed agents in the world. Could they possibly do better this weekend than a year ago?

Matthew Stafford, Jason Smith, and Brian Orakpo are guarantees to go in the first round. Other CAA clients who have a strong/solid chance of being selected in the first round include Malcolm Jenkins, Brian Cushing, Jeremy Maclin, Knowshon Moreno, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Eben Britton, Josh Freeman, and James Laurinaitis.

Obviously it would be entirely ridiculous if 11 CAA clients were drafted in the first round, but look at the names listed above. Could it not happen? Even if CAA matches the number it put up last year (6) or does slightly better, the company will have a lot to be happy about. It is rare to see any agency consistently capture a large amount of the top prospects in consecutive years. And then there’s CAA.

CAA’s main competition last year was Eugene Parker of Maximum Sports, with 5 clients taken in the first round. Eugene will have a sure first rounder again this year with Michael Crabtree. Tyson Jackson is almost a certainty to be picked in the first round as well, but after those two, it looks like Maximum Sports won’t have anyone selected for a while.

Who will take Maximum Sports’s position from last year? There really is no agency that has a chance to come even close to the number that CAA puts up. Those in the distance, vying for 2nd place in number of first round selections, will include Octagon, BEST, Athletes First, and FAAM.
