In two hours, I will be on stage at the O’Connell Center (where UF plays its basketball games), officially graduating from University of Florida’s Levin College of Law. The whole family is in town, which is nice (but rare). On Monday, I begin studying for the Florida Bar. As I have mentioned before, other than being a student of Sports Law, I have really enjoyed reading up on Intellectual Property issues. Here’s one that might be interesting for those of you who share a liking of IP Law. Dynasty is representing some new players in basketball, including a few that are coming off tremendous seasons overseas and in college. And the baseball draft is less than a month away. Here are some stories I missed over the past week:

The New York Yankees love the Jews. I am down in South Florida for the weekend. It is nice to see part of my family…a five hour drive is not the worst thing in the world. I am turning in a paper for my Business Organizations class on Monday. The topic: Duties of Sports Agents to Athletes and Statutory Regulation Thereof. Lots of SPARTA and UAAA discussion involved. I will post the paper online sometime in the near future. Our young baseball players have started short season ball, and some of our more experienced guys continue to perform well. We are still advising some players who were drafted. Time to enjoy my family and dog, Mushu. Here are some stories I missed over the past week:

Sports Agents

Would you pay $4.25 million for a 6’7 205 lbs 16-year old pitcher who can throw 95 mph? I would strongly consider purchasing the kid so that I could show him around to my friends and instantly become the coolest cat on the block. But on a serious note, $4.25 million is a serious amount of money for any team to pay a youngster that can only be considered a project. Out of all teams, the last one that I would have ever predicted to shell out this kind of money is the Oakland Athletics. Predictions mean nothing.

The international signing period opens tomorrow, but teams not named the Oakland As ought not to bother trying to woo Michael Inoa and his agent, Adam Katz of WMG. You thought that WMG was just a powerhouse in the world of basketball? Think again. Katz has already verbally agreed to a deal with Billy Beane and the As for his client, which includes a $4.25 million signing bonus. Sorry, Yankees, but the guy known for his Moneyball tactics beat you in one of his rare money-spending moves.

Another busy week of summer has blown by, which means that it is getting closer and closer to my return to lovely Gainesville, Florida. Nothing against the town that UF sits in, but I am getting quite comfortable with spending much of each day down here in South Florida working on Dynasty and this blog. The future looks bright; I just wish it would get here already without me having to age another two years. Anyway, I am happy with the way that my hometown Heat did in the draft last night. And tomorrow should be exciting, as I will be heading to the Gator Greats Alumni Basketball Game being held at Florida Atlantic University. Hanging out with Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer, and Udonis Haslem is never a bad thing. Here are some stories I failed to cover over the past week:
