File this one under the “a week late” column. Exactly a week ago, Jason La Canfora of NFL.com tweeted that Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Harry Douglas changed representation and signed with Todd France. Douglas was formerly represented by David Rich of Rich Sports Management. I will say that I like the fact that Rich lists the states he is registered as an agent in (Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Tennessee, and Michigan), at the very top of his website. However, he has had at least a week to take down the Harry Douglas player profile.

Douglas played his college ball at the University of Louisville, which Rich lists as a city where his company has an office. In his third season with the Atlanta Falcons, Douglas has become a bigger part of the Atlanta offense, and may have wanted a better known football agent. Further, it probably does not hurt that France is based in Atlanta. Douglas is not yet a superstar, with only 4 receptions in 2 games this season, but many believe that he has the potential to be the recipient of more passes in the near future.

Only a couple of days ago, the NFL announced that it will not be suspending Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt for pleading guilty to a reckless driving charge and his arrest for allegedly concealing marijuana from police. Britt will still see a limited snap count in his team’s first regular season game against the Jacksonville Jaguars due to a hamstring injury and a quadriceps problem.

Between Britt’s legal altercations and injuries, he has certainly had his plate full. One must assume that his agent Todd France was deeply involved in assisting Britt with all of his off-the-field matters. However, France has been relinquished of those duties with Britt formally changing agents, leaving France and hiring Bill Johnson. Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean writes that Britt signed with Bill Johnson of Pro-Files Sports, Inc., which is partially correct. Pro-Files Sports merged with Athletic Resource Management to create SportsTrust Advisors. So Britt will call Bill Johnson his agent and become a SportsTrust Advisors client.

Last week, Georgia Tech lost its 2009 ACC Conference Championship, was told that it has to pay a $100,000 fine, and is on 4-years of probation all because the NCAA found out that a friend of an employee of an Atlanta, Georgia sports agency provided impermissible benefits to a football player on that 2009 football team. Actually, it is more than that. The NCAA was upset that Georgia Tech failed to cooperate and interfered with the NCAA’s investigation of the impermissible benefits.

Georgia Tech Athletics Director Dan Radakovich confirmed that the employee of the Atlanta, Georgia sports agency is former Georgia Tech quarterback Calvin Booker. The NCAA infractions report points Booker to being with Demaryius Thomas and Morgan Burnett when the impermissible benefits were passed out. The impermissible benefits were $312 worth of clothing.

Georgia Tech believes that the NCAA has information that proves Booker was affiliated with is RFL Sports. Booker was once an RFL Sports client when he had dreams of playing professional ball. I have not heard much about RFL Sports in the past other than it being a small start-up football agency operated by Richard Kopelman and Terry Bolar, which hired NFLPA certified contract advisor Sean Stellato in the past. Kopelman left RFL Sports and started KLASS Sports. My notes indicate that Stellato went with Kopelman.

Demaryius Thomas has stated that he was offered a lot of things while in college, but did not take anything. He also made sure to say that his current agent (Todd France) never offered him anything, which is one of the reasons why he chose to sign with France.

Kopelman told a reporter that he has no knowledge of Calvin Booker “providing anything to anybody,” and that he was not involved in anything nor does he even know that anything even occurred. He also has stated that Booker never worked for him or RFL Sports in any capacity.

I see no reason not to believe Kopelman. Yet, Josina Anderson (who has done an absolutely tremendous job getting in touch with the parties surrounding this event), Tweeted the following five days ago:

When questioned by the NCAA, Thomas says it seemed investigators tried to confirm, "if Calvin Booker was a runner for Richard Kopelman."
July 14, 2011 2:24 pm via TweetDeckReplyRetweetFavorite

@JosinaAnderson
Josina Anderson

I assume that eventually Calvin Booker will have to speak up about who he was working for. Until then, the agent industry remains shady and clouded as usual.

Peyton Hillis has eclipsed 1,000 yards in a single season and found himself as the cover-boy for videogame Madden 12. He also has also switched his representation. Hillis was formerly represented by SportsTrust Advisors, but made a switch to Kelli Masters of KM Sports. Recently, we covered the story of Kelvin Sheppard leaving SportsTrust Advisors for Universal Sports & Entertainment. Later, Sheppard left Universal Sports for Todd France of FAAM.

Jason Wulterkens wrote an Agent Spotlight on Kelli Masters back in May 2008. Not only is Masters an agent to football players, she is also a former Miss Oklahoma. How is a mere male agent supposed to compete with that?

Not one of the more recognizable names in the business (yet!), Masters is certainly building her practice year after year. She is part of a team of agents that represent Gerald McCoy, who was drafted #3 overall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2010.

Hillis was not drafted until the 7th round of the 2008 NFL Draft, but he has become one of the best running backs in the game. With Hillis, Gerald McCoy, and others as clients, Kelli Masters is quickly making her way up the ranks.

Notes

Creative Artists Agency (Tom Condon and Ben Dogra) led all agencies with 5 players selected in the first round. Most impressive about that fact is that all 5 players were selected before pick 24. 4 of those players were selected before pick 12. In 2010, CAA represented 6 first round players on Day 1 of the Draft.

Athletes First had the 2nd most picks with 4 players going in the first round. Their drafted players were also selected in the top portion of the first round. All 4 of their clients selected in the first round were taken before pick 18.

SportsTrust Advisors, the new company created out of the merger of Pat Dye, Jr.’s ProFiles Sports Inc. and Jimmy Sexton’s Athletic Resource Management (ARM) had the 3rd most players drafted in the first round. Julio Jones, and especially Christian Ponder, went higher than many had expected.

A lot of familiar names on the list. This year, the coming out party is for Patrick Lawlor of Galaxy Sports (representing Patrick Peterson). Last year, Joe Haden was selected two spots later than Patrick Peterson was drafted this year. Haden’s representative, Malik Hafeez Shareef, was also a brand new competitor for the large agencies to follow.

We have recently been hearing that Dareus has dropped Todd France of France AllPro Athlete Management (FAAM), who had been representing Dareus since roughly the start of 2011. As of the publishing of this post, Dareus has not officially chosen new representation; however, I hear that he is between only a couple of firms. The two names that have popped up on my radar are Ladardere Unlimited and Allegiant Athletic Agency (a3).

Dunlap was a second round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2010 NFL Draft. Many “draft experts” ranked Dunlap as the best Defensive End in the country going into the 2009 season and quite a few even pegged him as the future #1 overall pick of the 2010 NFL Draft. He certainly had the talent and physique to earn himself a spot at the top of the draft. But between being arrested and charged for driving under the influence and having a mediocre statistical 2009 campaign, he dropped to the second round of the draft. He proved his skill in limited time with the Bengals in 2010.

The 6’6, 290lb DE racked up 9.5 sacks in his rookie season and even got himself a safety. He also got himself a new agent in the form of Rosenhaus. Dunlap was previously represented by Todd France of FAAM, who is no small fish in the agent world, himself.
